Montford Historic District

Asheville

Welcome to Montford

Lake Toxaway

Montford is Asheville’s most Historic Neighborhood. Located just north of Downtown, a portion of Montford is a National Register Historic District.

Consisting of beautiful architecture, a historic cemetery, and amazing food (Nine Mile is a team favorite!), it’s no wonder Montford is such a treasured destination in the Asheville area.

The area boasts many parks including Montford Park, Hummingbird Park, Magnolia Park & Playground, and the Tempie Avery Community Center which includes a playground, ping-pong, a climbing wall, and is great for watching the sun set.

Each summer, the Montford Park Players bring crowds to Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre for the outdoor Shakespeare Festival.

Along with the seasonal shows at Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre, Montford hosts many other festivals and events throughout the year. Check out the Annual Greek Festival, hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Asheville, usually sometime in September. This event includes traditional Greek food, dancing, and music! There is also the Montford Music and Arts Festival and Porch Fest!

According to AVLtoday, “come fall, an old school tavern + restaurant named Tall John’s aims to liven up the block in the very same building (where Chiesa used to be).

The eatery is a concept from Chef Trevor Payne, who plans to serve snacks, dinner, brunch, desserts and an expansive drink menu. There will be indoor + outdoor patio seating, plus a daytime espresso, coffee + wine bar program in the lower level space.

Chef Trevor says to expect tavern staples from Europe and early America, along with “vegetable-centric dishes” and seasonally rotating food specials.”

Buyer Beware

Did you know that Montford is known for sink holes? Yes, there are homeowners who wake up and their yard is sinking in! Although Montford is one of Asheville’s most desirable historic neighborhoods, old houses also come with old infrastructure. And if the sink hole occurs on your property, then you as the homeowner are responsible for the damages and repair. Contact your local experts to learn more about sink hole history in Montford!

While Montford has plenty to offer, the neighborhood’s close proximity to Downtown Asheville also gives you easy walking access to Downtown restaurants and bars as well as local grocery stores.

Next time you’re in the area, notice the beautiful Bed & Breakfasts, read about the former Highland Hospital that once housed Zelda Fitzgerald, and end your day with Manhattan Service for Two at the local watering hole, Little Jumbo.

Montford real estate is sprinkled with craftsman and modern new builds, funky and charming bungalows and historic homes ranging from Victorian and Queen Anne to Neoclassical and Colonial Revival.
