Montford Historic District

Asheville

Welcome to Montford

Lake Toxaway

Montford is Asheville’s most Historic Neighborhood. Located just north of Downtown, a portion of Montford is a National Register Historic District.

Consisting of beautiful architecture, a historic cemetery, and amazing food (Nine Mile is a team favorite!), it’s no wonder Montford is such a treasured destination in the Asheville area.

The area boasts many parks including Montford Park, Hummingbird Park, Magnolia Park & Playground, and the Tempie Avery Community Center which includes a playground, ping-pong, a climbing wall, and is great for watching the sun set.

Each summer, the Montford Park Players bring crowds to Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre for the outdoor Shakespeare Festival.

Along with the seasonal shows at Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre, Montford hosts many other festivals and events throughout the year. Check out the Annual Greek Festival, hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Asheville, usually sometime in September. This event includes traditional Greek food, dancing, and music! There is also the Montford Music and Arts Festival and Porch Fest!

When Tall John’s first opened its doors on October 19th, 2022, Chef/Owner Trevor Payne had a clear vision for what they wanted to accomplish: classic, delicious, expertly crafted food and drinks served in a friendly, relaxed environment. Inspired by the restaurant’s location, a strikingly tall historic building in the heart of Montford, the two set out to create a space where neighbors and visitors alike could enjoy an experience that is at once special and unpretentious.

“I genuinely wanted to approach the location and project from the standpoint of what would best support the Montford neighborhood. What did Montford need? What would be complementary to what exists already here? How do we make people comfortable and welcome in the restaurant? How do we make that genuinely the scope of the project?”

While Montford has plenty to offer, the neighborhood’s close proximity to Downtown Asheville also gives you easy walking access to Downtown restaurants and bars as well as local grocery stores.

Next time you’re in the area, notice the beautiful Bed & Breakfasts, read about the former Highland Hospital that once housed Zelda Fitzgerald, and end your day with Manhattan Service for Two at the local watering hole, Little Jumbo.

On a quiet morning in 1911, a woman named Matilda Spann stood beside an empty lane called Iola Place, overlooking Montford Park, and built the first home the little street would ever know. Only one more was built on that lane and on a lot that she had carved out and sold. Long before the road became Montford Park Place, before Asheville grew into the mountain city it is today, this charming cottage quietly began its story. More than a century later, it remains one of Montford’s earliest surviving cottages and a contributing property within Asheville’s nationally recognized Montford Historic District. Thoughtfully updated while honoring its historic character, the home offers approximately 1,410 square feet, two bedrooms and one bath, with a great former sunporch, plus a large covered front porch looking over Montford Park. The common rooms include a comfortable living room with bay windows facing the front yard, a lovely dining room, and a covered back porch off the kitchen. There is an unfinished basement for dry storage and an additional old garage area for your outdoor items. Recent improvements include new roof decking with 50 year shingles, new gutters, new central a/c, gas furnace and a basement dehumidifier. The property is a beautifully proportioned 0.23-acre lot across from historic Montford Park that has been surveyed and an approval to be subdivided from both the Historic committee and the city planner. All paperwork will be conveyed. Buyer to verify! There is something rare about living in a home that has witnessed generations come and go while remaining rooted in the same remarkable place. Rich with history, craftsmanship, and timeless charm, this is more than a home—it is one of the first chapters in the story of one of Asheville’s most beloved neighborhoods. Walkable to downtown Asheville, the Reed Greenway, 3 restaurants, & a market all in the neighborhood…and so much more! This historic cottage is just waiting for it's next chapter....
